Genomics and Public Health: South America and Beyond

Based around extended clips from the Brazilian documentary ‘Four Legacies: Population Medical Genetics’ (2012), this roundtable discussion will look at opportunities and challenges medical genetics poses for public health in developing countries The film explores the difficulties of communicating genetic risk, the dangers of stigmatising communities through genetic research and the challenge of turning complex genetic information into public health solutions.
Panel discussion chaired by Sahra Gibbon (UCL, Anthropology) with Lavinia Schuler Faccini (Genetics, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil), Victor Acuna Alonzo (Genetics, National School of Anthropology and History, Mexico) and Mike Parker (The Ethox Centre, Department of Public Health, Oxford University)
